ABSTRACT

101Following the end of the Second World War the government raised the school-leaving age, and offered to erect huts to provide the extra classroom space that was needed for the greater number of pupils. This was a time when there was a considerable shortage of traditional building materials and of skilled labour. In view of this, Hertfordshire County Council decided to develop its own, modular system for designing permanent new schools, which would use prefabricated components, made in the factory, that would not require such a high level of skilled labour to erect on site.
