ABSTRACT

109The air raids of the Second World War destroyed many European urban centres. Some, such as the French towns of Nantes or St Malo, decided to rebuild along the same lines as before, re-creating the appearance of the old towns. In Britain, including Plymouth and the area around St Paul' s in London, the opportunity was taken to redevelop comprehensively along modern lines. Perhaps the greatest challenge of all came with the rebuilding of bomb-ravaged Coventry in the 1950s.
