ABSTRACT

141The Abercrombie Plan for the future of Greater London was drawn up in 1944. It suggested the construction of ten new ‘satellite’ towns around London, in order to reduce the pressure on the congested inner area. After the war the New Towns Act of 1946 designated an initial 12 sites for new towns, in places like Stevenage, Crawley and Harlow. More sites followed, and in 1967 Milton Keynes was proposed, with a projected eventual population of 250 000.
