ABSTRACT

167The Canary Wharf development is a collection of buildings standing on the Isle of Dogs, just to the east of the City of London. One of the buildings — the Canary Wharf Tower — is the tallest in Europe. The development is significant for two reasons: it shows an approach to design known as ‘master planning’, in which one designer takes responsibility for the overall layout of the project, while the design of individual buildings within that layout is undertaken by different firms. In this way there is variety within the whole development, and the illusion is created that it has been constructed over a period of time.
