17The scale of the mania for building railways in the 1840s is difficult for us to comprehend today. In Newcastle the arrival of the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway in 1850 involved the broaching of the castle' s walls and the construction of a magnificent high-level bridge over the Tyne that at last made an effective link with the neighbouring community in Gateshead.
