25There was nothing new about the building of self-sufficient communities according to visionary plans. The usual basis for these developments was religious. In the 18th century the Moravians, a German-based Protestant group, created a number of ‘model communities’ throughout Britain and the rest of the world, in which people came together to live, work and worship in a kind of Utopia on earth.
