ABSTRACT
There are now over 8000 conservation areas in England, and smaller numbers in Scotland and Wales. Since their introduction in 1967, when just four were designated as the first group, they have become a cornerstone of conservation policy in this country. They contain an estimated 1.3 million buildings-something over 4% of the nation’s total building stock.
