ABSTRACT
West Sweden is a vital centre for Scandinavian trade and industry. Gothenburg, founded in 1621 as a free-port, is the node upon which a great deal of this industrial development has been focused during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The years after the 1960s became, however, a period of industrial decline in some sectors, most especially in the textile and shipbuilding industries.
