ABSTRACT

The first part of the research comprised three postal surveys seeking to gain broad-based information about the attitudes and practices of key property professionals in responding to the building needs of disabled people. Architects and chartered surveyors were identified as key professionals in the development process, so too property development companies. The first survey, of a 10 per cent (or 770) sample of UK architectural practices, took place between December 1997 and March 1998. As Chapter 5 intimates, the sample was derived from a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) database of RIBA registered architectural practices with questionnaires sent to named individuals. The sample was random although proportionally weighted to reflect the geographical distribution of architectural practices. The second survey, of 50 per cent (or 263) of Swedish architectural practices registered with the Svenska Arkitekters Riksforbund (SAR), was undertaken in the period from February to May 1998. The sample

was derived from the SAR directory on the same basis as the UK survey. A response rate of 105 (or 40 per cent) practices was attained.
