ABSTRACT
To the rear of the slender period of recorded human history-a few thousand years —and of the limited portion of pre-history of which some trace remains-another ten or twenty thousand years-lie the millions of years that contained the lives of the first human beings. We know nearly nothing about this period, but speculate almost everything.
