ABSTRACT
Europe, at its base, was a peasant society, and at its summit an aristocracy, with only a small middle class between them. Despite the limits imposed by the state and the introduction of schools, the father remained the model in the families of all three classes. But in order to be a model, he had to be visible to his children. And in order to be visible, he had to do work that didn’t take him far from home.
