ABSTRACT

The discussion in the previous chapter showed that the degree of symmetry between competitors and the degree of activity in interaction between competitors were related to each other. Four separate contexts of competition can be identified from these two dimensions; namely symmetric-active competition, symmetric-passive competition, asymmetric-active competition, and asymmetricpassive competition. Industries with similar structures can therefore be studied based on differences in the degree of symmetry between competitors and in the degree of activity in competition.
