ABSTRACT

We have considered the question of order-giving. That obviously is only an aspect of the subject of authority. All through books on business administration you find the word authority constantly used. We hear of supreme authority, of ultimate authority, of final authority. We hear of the delegation of authority, of the division of authority, of the limit of authority. These expressions are current phrases in the business world. But it seems to me that some of these expressions are a survival of former days. And are consequently misleading. For they do not describe business as conducted to-day in many plants. Business practice has gone ahead of business theory, business practice has gone ahead of business language.
