ABSTRACT

The three components of a river’s load – bedload, suspended load (including wash load) and dissolved load – were introduced in Chapter 5. This discussed the large-scale transfer of sediment through the fluvial system. The actual processes of sediment transport will be considered here, with an emphasis on bedload transport. Interactions between flow and the channel boundary lead to adjustments of channel form, which result from processes of erosion, transport and deposition. In this chapter you will learn about:

particles. ● How sediment is transported in river channels. ● How, where and why sediment is deposited.
