ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will broaden the analysis of exogenous factors and enquire into the impact of one major cultural factor, namely ethnicity, on democracy. People are different in two major ways, besides the possession of economic resources. We will focus on two major sources of cultural differences among countries, namely ethnicity and religion. The ethnic and religious differences between people constitute macro distinctions as groups cluster according to ethnic and religious criteria. The social structure of a country consists of groups which are defined (and often define themselves) according to ethnic and religious criteria. The implications for democracy need to be spelled out. Let us start with ethnicity and democracy in this chapter.
