ABSTRACT
Valuable study of transposition clefs or chiavi trasportate, generically known as chiavette, in Italian music from the sixteenth through the early nineteenth centuries. Barbieri surveys the origins of the term and the use of transportation clefs in Italy, and discusses issues of transposition and vocal tessitura, and clef groupings. With numerous examples and illustrations.
