ABSTRACT

Every year, there are enormous numbers of migrants moving from rural to urban areas. This tendency, which started in some provinces in south China, has now extended to other parts of China. There is no doubt that labour mobility is an important factor in the socio-economic development of China. In this study, existing theories and case studies on migration and poverty have been reviewed; the current situation of poverty and internal migration in China has been discussed; and a case study has been carried out in Shanxi, a typical province in central China. Based on the results in the previous chapters, this chapter systematically analyses the causes and effects of rural-urban migration in China, especially Shanxi, as well as the role of rural-urban migration in resolving rural poverty.
