According to all general readings of the time, the eighteenth century in India saw momentous changes. What were these changes? Why were they momentous? The impulse behind these questions is more than just desire for knowledge, or even the need to integrate a diverse scholarship. Rather, the motivation comes from an unresolved tension in the historiography.
