ABSTRACT
The Arab East republics came into existence as the result either of the withdrawal of a European imperialist or mandatory power, or of the violent overthrow of the indigenous monarchy. Syria, Lebanon and South Yemen fall into the first category; and Egypt, Iraq and North Yemen into the second.
