ABSTRACT
Political forces in the Arab East can be broadly categorised as conservative, centrist, or leftist. But since such forces are best understood in a socio-economic context, it is necessary to sketch a profile of the region in social and economic terms. The major socio-economic factors are: Islam; tribalism; natural resources, specially oil; the size of the population, indigenous and foreign; and the level of economic development.
