ABSTRACT
Until the Law for the System of Political Parties was passed in June 1977, republican Egypt had been allowed only one political party. In 1953 it was called the Liberation Rally; in 1957, the National Union; and in 1962, the Arab Socialist Union. But no matter what name the organisation bore, it represented a wide spectrum of socio-economic interests, and followed an essentially centrist course.
