ABSTRACT

In the first unit we assumed that the word bicycle always has the same meaning, namely ‘bicycle’. In this unit we shall recognise that the word ‘meaning’ is commonly used in another way as well. To avoid confusion, I shall use the standard technical term for the first kind of meaning, which is SENSE. Although this is a technical term, it actually corresponds in meaning (i.e. sense!) to its ordinary use in sentences like ‘He may not be lying in the strict sense of the word’. As far as bicycle is concerned, then, ‘bicycle’ is its sense.
