ABSTRACT
Vocabulary is one aspect of language that continues to develop throughout and beyond childhood. Using Templin’s (1957) estimate of vocabulary size for a sixyear-old as some 14,000 words, Carey (1978) noted that the young child must learn an average of nine new words a day between the ages of 18 months and six years (see Estimating vocabulary size, below).
