ABSTRACT
With its crimes against humanity, such as extermination, torture, starvation, and crimes of association, as well as collective retribution inside and outside its system of concentration camps, North Korea today presents one of the worst human rights situations in the world. 1 As North Korean isolation increases worldwide because of its actions, can the Kim regime continue to depend on the People’s Republic of China for economic survival and political cover? This chapter looks to evaluate the past and present economic and political relationships between the People’s Republic of China and North Korea and investigate any shifting policies that might provide insight to mitigating the dual human rights and security crises currently ongoing in North Korea.
