ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the question “What are the conditions imposed on imagination by assuming a role for it in understanding?” This involves drawing upon a recent philosophical theory of visualisation; further evidence of the relation Kant assumed between imagination and understanding; and a consideration of some of the themes found in the writing of William Wordsworth which demonstrate the relevance to artistic practice of some of the ideas found in Kant’s CJ. In order to illustrate the key theme of this chapter, I discuss the artwork of a contemporary artist, Doris Salcedo.
