ABSTRACT

In its most basic form, a signal is the transference of information from one point to another. Whether the information is being transmitted electronically or even if it is just between two people talking in the same room, the important thing is that information is being sent via the use of a signal. The key aspect of signals intelligence, therefore, is being able to intercept these signals and gain information from them. For the intelligence community much can be determined by analysing either the external characteristics of the signal – who has sent a message to whom – or its internal content – what was said.
