ABSTRACT

Before you begin animating and creating the fi nal images of your fi lm, a lot of pre-production is necessary. The main task areas of pre-production are setup, design, storyboards, animatic, and fi nal prep. In general, completing preproduction before moving on to any production tasks is a good idea. There is no hard and fast rule about doing more pre-production as you go along, but you can get distracted if you are constantly (and literally) “going back to the drawing board.” On Booty Call , all the pre-production and 3D pre-production was completed before we began animating, except for a little bit of modeling and rigging on some of the props that the animators dreamed up while we were on course. No more than 10 percent of my time was spent going back and modeling and rigging props while animation was underway. To fi nish your fi lm requires planning; here’s how we did it with success on our fi lm.
