ABSTRACT

In this time of change and self-examination, adolescents can often become confused about their goals and distinctiveness, and worry about whether they are outside the norm. There is intense evaluation of their abilities in relation to their peers in the secondary environment – which is less personal than the primary school environment. This can be a particularly demanding time for LLD students because of their additional difficulties in coping with the secondary school curriculum. The negative effect on the self-concept of students who perceive that they have a problem means that some find difficulty in resolving identity issues and in making even the most elementary decisions.
