ABSTRACT

The waiting rooms and the counseling rooms of the RHO clinics in Tarma and Zitounia were lined with posters. Some of these posters focused on contraception, while others described good mothering practices. One of the first posters I noticed during my fieldwork was actually located in the adolescent clinic that the RHO runs, located near Tarma. This clinic caters specifically to teenagers and young adults and offers services similar to the one for adults, such as reproductive healthcare, family medicine, dermatology, and psychiatry. The hours are slightly limited to accommodate the school day. Besides the exam room and the counseling room, the adolescent clinic also includes a large room that can be used for gatherings or events, such as those sponsored by its youth club. When I first walked into the waiting room of the clinic, I noticed a poster on the wall above some of the chairs. It is of a woman's hands painted with henna. 1 She is holding a male condom ever so delicately between her index fingers and thumbs.
