ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the spectre of obesity hovers behind all food treats; some foods excite more acute fears. Red meat is associated with cardiovascular disease and cancer as well as obesity while the technological advances in agriculture., literally the fear or dislike of new foods, varies at different ages. New-born children have simple taste preferences for sweet foods; human milk and even human amniotic fluid is sweet. For childhood-nostalgic adults, Dandelion Burdock and Cloudy Lemonade are back, and they come in returnable bottles, more environmentally friendly and another memory of decades ago revived. Such food nostalgia may explain the success of Polish food in Britain. As far back as the fifth century bc Hippocrates said 'Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food'. There is a long history of food as medicine, present also in traditional Chinese medicine and 2,000-year-old Indian Ayurvedic practice.
