ABSTRACT

Language tests refer to a set of mechanisms which are used in subtle ways to manipulate language and create de facto language policies. Language tests are widely used mechanisms that are considered covert since the public is not aware of their effects and impact in creating, affecting and imposing de facto language policies, often in contradiction to declared policies and for perpetuating ideological agendas. Language tests are considered a powerful device that is imposed by groups in power to affect language priorities, language practices and criteria of correctness often leading to inclusion and exclusions and to perpetuate ideologies. Tests are powerful also because they are imposed on all students in all schools, with no way of resisting them.
