ABSTRACT

The purpose of Chapter 14 is to draw together the major themes of the book in a short essay that describes the major features of schools and school systems where there is a degree of school self-management and an intention to push on to ensure that all schools are self-transforming. These features are organised loosely around governance, ethos, leadership and policy. The evidence is contained in preceding chapters, each of which addressed a particular theme. Each concluded with three short ‘messages’ for policymakers and practitioners. The intention in Chapter 14 is to achieve a degree of coherence among these themes rather than to revisit the evidence or compile a list of these messages.
