ABSTRACT

Nature assists Man who is part of Nature and thus also of the divine. Man also assists his fellow man. The regent who is on the path to divine status guides his subjects, and Pliny wishes to help his fellow citizens by presenting them with the sum of knowledge available at the time. The relationships constitute the fabric of the Natural History. Nature makes all her riches available to Man and furthermore provides certain human beings, for instance the natural philosophers, with greater insight as well as the ability to make something out of Nature's product, because they have such insight.
