ABSTRACT
The countryside is badly ruined: all the remains of ancient settlements — still clearly visible one century before — have totally disappeared. The human alteration of the surface of Mesopotamia during the last 150 years has exceeded by a factor of 1000:1 the effects of all previous human activity during the past 10,000 years.
