ABSTRACT

Chapters 4 and 5 described how the educational attainment and influence of mentors have affected the upward mobility of elite Chinese scientists. But achieving eminent status in science has much to do with the academic performance of scientists, which is one of the criteria of being a scientist (Zuckerman and Merton [1972] 1973: 501). This chapter will focus on the achievements of elite Chinese scientists to see whether and how their performance has been linked to their superior status.
