ABSTRACT

Spelling is the toughest single literacy problem to deal with. To spell correctly, your pupil has to be one hundred per cent accurate in their recall of every letter, whereas to read with one hundred per cent accuracy you scan words without needing a photographic recall of each and every letter sequence you see. Spelling is the literacy skill that can trigger off the highest level of emotional frustration and negativity from secondary school students. They have had years of covering up for spelling limitations and many have long since given up trying to improve it. Even pupils with otherwise mature literacy skills often find that their spelling is still an area of weakness.
