ABSTRACT

Once young Marcellus had been buried, his widow would be expected to pass the next ten months in mourning, but the daughter of Augustus Caesar could not be left long unmarried. Her father would clearly be taking private thought for this and there are stories that Augustus actually considered avoiding the risks of conferring the unique status of son-in-law on any potential successor by marrying her off to his private friend Proculeius, a man who had held aloof from political life.1
