ABSTRACT
Creating a congenial classroom atmosphere is something that some teachers do as if by magic, giving rise to the adage that teachers are born and not made. Although the ‘magic’ defies analysis, there are in fact a number of specific skills that can be learned, developed and practised, which will promote a positive climate for learning—not only about academic subjects, but about ourselves and the groups and communities in which we live.
