ABSTRACT
Artillery was originally designed as a direct fire system. It was positioned in line of sight of the enemy and because of its limited range was regarded as a front line arm. Writing in “On the New Employment of Artillery” in the 1840s, the Russian general Okunev noted: “The enemy must be perfectly uncovered, in order that every shot may tell” (1).
