ABSTRACT
If genre theory is a type of categorization,1 I think it only fitting for a set of papers devoted to matters of genre to return to that source in antiquity from which rules for categorization historically derive: the logicorhetorical tradition engendered in Greece, systematized by Aristotle, then extended by Cicero and Quintilian in Roman times (cf. Kennedy 1980: Chs 1-5).
