ABSTRACT

In the beginning of this book, it was argued that an understanding of the broader international as well as national political and historical contexts from the late nineteenth century onwards is absolutely necessary to develop a thorough comprehension of how modern education in Afghanistan developed since 1901. In the light of this argument this book presented an analysis of the nineteenth century race of colonization of independent and semi-independent states and tribes in South and Central Asia between Britain and Russia. The race for colonization, which came to be termed the Great Game, has had a profound influence on all aspects of life in Afghanistan until today. The presence and influence of international political elements in the national affairs of Afghanistan were then traced and analysed across all succeeding eras until the current date. Then, in the light of, and within the broader, international and national political and historical contexts, developments, challenges and legacies in education were analysed and discussed in each era since 1901 to the current date.
