ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we think about how the knowledge embodied in a schema may be translated into successful action; and about how the adaptability which, in the schema, exists only in potential, is made effective. The first stage is the possession of an appropriate schema, which we may think of as knowledge that. The second stage is deriving from this an appropriate plan of action, which we may call knowledge how. The third stage is translating this plan into action, which we may think of as being able. Although different, these three are closely related, and it is their relations that we explore in terms of the present model.
