ABSTRACT

Teaching has a relatively ‘flat’ career structure. In the post-compulsory sectors, as in schools, the conventional way to progress in career terms has been to move away from teaching, to managing departments, for example. In higher education, promotion may also be by means of recognised research output. In further education, salary increases are likely to bring responsibilities for the management and development of curriculum areas or teams of staff or for specific managerial functions across the college.
