ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I begin with a brief sketch of the views of utopian socialists on education. I then go on to briefly examine some of the thoughts on education of Karl Marx and Frederick Engels. Next I assess the contribution of the twentieth century’s most influential Marxist educationists, Louis Althusser and Sam Bowles and Herb Gintis, and the responses to their work. I conclude with some suggestions as to the future of Marxist educational theory, based on the work of Glenn Rikowski.
