ABSTRACT

The third research study, presented in this chapter, explores the regional context of microregionalism between Guangdong, Taiwan and Japan by examining the development of networking linkages across the Taiwan Strait with a particular focus on the development of cross-border production networks by Taiwanese electronics firms established in southern China. We also seek to explain how these networks effectively strengthen the link between Japan and China, since many Taiwanese electronics firms also have networking linkages with Japanese electronics firms. Once again, as in Chapters 3, 4 and 5 (research studies 1 and 2), the aim is to focus on the first two research questions: How should we define and characterize the key components of microregionalism connecting Guangdong, Taiwan and Japan? What kinds of policy environment and what actors in the host and home countries are needed to support cross-border economic relations?
