ABSTRACT

In order to deal with the problems raised by the contemporary

intellectual outlook it is necessary for religious believers to

spend some time first of all considering the nature of truth. This

means looking at the different ways in which truth may be

expressed, and how religious and scientific truth are related to

one another. At the present time many people seem to think that

the only form of truth is literal or factual truth, but this is far from

the case. It is not literally true that ‘the Lord is my shepherd’,

but it is nevertheless true in a profound sense. Truth in general

is a quality of verbal statements. A statement is true when what

it presents to our minds is something real, that is, something

which really exists or is an aspect of reality. The presentation,

however, can be made in different ways, as will now be shown.
