ABSTRACT

During the mission period whenever women were ill treated they could always turn to the missionaries for protection. In many an affray I overheard women threaten their male tormentors, ‘I'll tell kantha’ (I'll tell father, i.e., Revd Belcher). They were quite confident that Revd Belcher would do something for them. Although he never took physical action or even to my knowledge raised his voice, men were ashamed to be hauled up on the carpet.
