ABSTRACT

In modern societies there is a lack of objectivity in morals due to the belief that morality is relative and varies from one place to another. There is not the traditional framework of values supplied by religions but a stress on individual autonomy. In a context of a wide range of conflicting opinions there is a need for moral maturity on the part of the individual in order to avoid anarchy. Thinking on morality has been influenced by philosophers: the rationalism of Descartes, the empiricism of Hume, the utilitarianism of Bentham and Mill, the principles of Kant and the personal choice of the existentialist as seen in Sartre.1
