ABSTRACT

There are two issues that it is important to clear out of the way before proceeding. First, there is a question of terminology. Equity is often confused with, or used synonymously with, a variety of other concepts such as fairness, justice and equality. To try to provide a definitive account of all aspects of the relationships between them would be a diversion from the main argument of the book, but it is necessary to delineate as precisely as possible the form that these relationships will take in the discussion.
