ABSTRACT

Late at night, a car being driven at speed mounts the pavement and and hits a pedestrian out walking her dog. The car then crashes into a wall. Both the driver and the pedestrian are critically injured and are taken to the nearest hospital, where it is discovered that the pedestrian was sober but that the driver has concentrations of alcohol in his blood that are well above the legal limit. There is only one emergency bed available in the hospital. Moreover, the hospital is a private one; the driver has medical insurance, but the pedestrian has none.
